This isn't the first time the spacesuit has gotten a high-fashion update

Clad in designer spacesuits, pop sensation Katy Perry and five other women soared into space aboard a Blue Origin mission

Pop icon Katy Perry is once again pushing the boundaries of fashion this time, beyond Earth's atmosphere. As a member of Blue Origin's historic all-female NS-31 spaceflight on April 14, 2025, Perry donned a custom-designed spacesuit that seamlessly blended high fashion with space exploration.

The sleek, body-hugging suit featured a mandarin collar, an ombré effect, and flared pant legs with zippers at the calves. This innovative design was the brainchild of Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, co-founders of the luxury fashion brand Monse and creative directors at Oscar de la Renta. The duo was enlisted by Lauren Sánchez, Jeff Bezos's fiancée and fellow crew member, to infuse the mission with a touch of glamour.

Joining Perry and Sánchez on this groundbreaking journey were journalist Gayle King, NASA aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn. 
This mission marked the first all-women crewed spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's solo journey in 1963. The 11-minute suborbital flight aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket offered the crew a brief experience of weightlessness and a view of Earth from the edge of space

Perry's participation in the mission wasn't just about the flight; it was also a statement of empowerment and inspiration. She expressed hope that her journey would encourage her daughter and others to "reach for the stars, literally and figuratively."

This fusion of fashion and space travel isn't entirely new. In 2017, Chanel's runway show featured a rocket launch, and more recently, Prada collaborated with Axiom Space to design next-generation lunar suits for NASA's Artemis III mission. However, Perry's mission stands out for bringing haute couture directly into the realm of space exploration.

While the mission received praise for its pioneering spirit, it also faced criticism. Some viewed it as a superficial publicity stunt, questioning its relevance amid pressing global issues. Perry addressed the backlash, emphasizing her commitment to authenticity and resilience. She encouraged fans to pursue their dreams, no matter how "crazy" they might seem.
